DogStar Theater was born out of the passion and vision of husband and wife Nita and Justin, and their dogs, Apollo and Cleo. Our theater company is based on the principles of collaboration, whole-sightedness, and shared inspiration. We strive to bring work to the stage that sparks creative conversation, initiates connection within the community, and inspires positive action.
When not onstage, you can find us rehearsing after hours at
Creative Director, Founder
Nita has been acting, singing and dancing since she can remember. Her passion for theater brought her from her roots in Boulder, Colorado to New York for undergrad work and a BA from Barnard College, on to the British American Dramatic Academy in London, westward to San Francisco then Santa Monica, playing her violin in rock bands and acting in theater and film. In Santa Monica, she met her beloved husband, Justin, on stage, and a new adventure of life and love began. Soon the acting bug left her and was replaced by a love for directing and teaching, which took her to attend and complete an MFA at Naropa University. Nita has directed and taught in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, London, and Boulder, with her favorite productions including Cyrano de Bergerac, Blithe Spirit, Hamlet, The Foreigner and Three Tall Women.
Founding Company Member, Actor
Justin fell in love with acting late in life. While racing bikes in college and majoring in Spanish at the University of Oregon, Justin was unexpectedly bitten by the acting bug. Once it bit, it never let go, and he quickly changed his major to Theater, acting in every production available to him, both in school and in the local community theaters nearby. After graduation, Justin returned to his hometown of Santa Monica to continue pursuing his passion, and for over a decade acted in many plays and films in Los Angeles and Colorado. Acting was put on hold for a few years while building his and Nita's home and establishing his thriving dog training business here in Santa Barbara. Justin is thrilled to be back working again onstage - the place where he feels most creatively at home. Talented in many regards, Justin is also an avid motorcyclist, cyclist, and photographer, and co-owner of K Nine Solutions.
